The merging of OPCA/SOPOL, starting in May and ending in November 2007, revealed what was done best in each firm, bringing all the experience acquired over the years to the new one. OPWAY Engenharia, SA, therefore started operations in January 2008 as a company certified in the following areas:
These certifications crossed from SOPOL to OPWAY, Engenharia, SA under a strategy agreed with the certifying body – APCER. Once OPWAY, Engenharia SA's management system was implemented, it was audited by APCER to check compliance with the standards’ requirements.
With this model, for which we undertake the commitment to continuous improvement, we also have the fundamental goal of satisfying our customers, and all other interested parties, by implementing routines that promote this satisfaction.
2008 Safety Campaign:
The Safety Department of OPWAY, headed by Pedro Vasco, got a campaign underway to make workers aware that risk behaviour must be avoided and best practices must be adopted in terms of safety.
This campaign involved creating eye-catching posters and canvasses conveying messages and placing them around the workplaces – from the offices to the works sites. It ended with a series of warnings about the main hazards that everyone working in the sector should look out for: “This year we decided to organize a more inclusive campaign, targeting more situations, but for 2009 we’re thinking of going back to concentrating on messages and advice about the behaviour that led to the most serious accidents the previous year”, explains Pedro Vasco. He coordinates a safety team of 28 officers, experts in this field, who operate in all areas of the Company, with particular emphasis on the job sites of works in progress. In relation to the first half of 2008, the frequency and seriousness indexes (FI=16.19 and SI= 0.12 including subcontractors), have been calculated, according to OPWAY’s head of safety, and they are well short of the average for the sector, and falling.
